Dear Colleague
HESA recently invited institutions to comment on a number of issues relating to the 2004/05 DLHE Longitudinal Survey which will take place later this year http://www.hesa.ac.uk/circulars/dlhelong/08/01. Following consultation and discussion at the first Steering Group meeting for the survey HESA is now able to confirm:
Institutions will manage the selection of contact details for IFF Research, as for the 2002/03 survey.
In addition institutions will be asked to provide email addresses for the rest of the graduates in the 2004/05 cohort (i.e. those not included in the sample) for whom an email address is available (and who have not explicitly refused to take part in the follow-up survey). When the contact details were collected from institutions for the first longitudinal survey, email addresses were supplied for just under 20% of the sample and a response rate of 22% was achieved. Assuming similar figures for all graduates who are not in the selected sample it is hoped that this time around an extra 10,000 survey responses can be collected using these available email addresses.
After the survey IFF Research will provide some basic tables along with the data relating to institutions’ own graduates. These are likely to reflect outcomes by demographic and study characteristics. If there is anything specific institutions would also like to see included in these tables please email consult@hesa.ac.uk.
Research Council involvement in the survey
HESA can confirm that the Research Councils will be including additional questions aimed only at those graduates who left with a PhD or research-based Masters in 2004/05. The sample for the survey will include all those who left with a PhD or research-based Masters in 2004/05 (i.e. 100% sample) and the data captured will form the basis for further work by the Research Councils www.rcuk.ac.uk/news/080730.htm .
Publicity
Institutions who responded to the earlier consultation were unable to provide suggestions of case studies that might be used in publicity material for this survey. The information would be included to encourage graduates to respond and to allow them to see how useful the data can be. If any institutions do have some material that could be used in this way please contact HESA in the next few weeks.
IFF Research will be contacting institutions about publicising the survey in local alumni newsletters or on websites.
If you have any queries please visit the Frequently asked questions for HE institutions in the first instance.
Yours sincereley
