Tables for 2004/05 to 2011/12 are in .xls format. Tables for 1994/05 to 2003/04 are in .csv format. Both can be opened in Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet application. Most tables are extracted from the HESA Students in Higher Education Institutions publication. The introductions to recent years' publications contain further useful tables. Full publications for 1994/95 to 2003/04 are available for free.
Note 1. HESA publications changed format in 2009/10. The Institution table only changes its layout. The new Subject table contains additional columns showing first year students. Earlier Ethnicity and Disability tables are restricted to first year students only. Earlier Qualifications tables are broken down by level, mode of study, domicile, gender, class of first degree and subject area.
Note 2. The HESA Standard Registration Population was changed in 2007/08 to exclude writing-up and sabbatical students. These students are included in the tables for earlier years, which are therefore not comparable with those for 2007/08 and later. This change only affects the Students tables and does not affect Qualifications tables.
Note 3. From 1994/95 to 2003/04 tables are published in .csv format. These tables can be opened with Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet application.
Note 4. The coding of subjects changed in 2002/03. This change only affects the Subject tables. See the Joint Academic Coding System documents for more information.
Note 5. The population used for published counts of students changed in 2000/01. From 1994/95 to 1999/00 published figures counted student enrolments as at 1 December of the academic year. From 2000/01 students are counted regardless of whether they are active on 1 December of the reporting period. See the 2000/01 definitions for more details of this change.
