Performance Indicators in Higher Education in the UK 2010/11

Indicators for Widening Participation and Non-continuation are published today on the HESA website at www.hesa.ac.uk/pi


The full tables show the indicators for every HE institution in the UK alongside their benchmark. Summary tables showing statistics for the whole UK can be found here: www.hesa.ac.uk/pis/summary.

Widening participation of under-represented groups

The latest statistics at www.hesa.ac.uk/pis/urg show that of all young, full-time, first degree entrants in 2010/11:

  • 88.7% were from state schools,
  • 30.6% were from NS-SEC classes 4-7 and
  • 10.5% were from low-participation neighbourhoods.

The graph below shows the proportion of young, full-time, first degree entrants from state schools* for the years 1998/99 to 2010/11:

The percentage of young entrants to full-time first degree courses from state schools has risen from 85.0% in 1998/99 to 88.7% in 2010/11

Non-continuation rates

The latest statistics at www.hesa.ac.uk/pis/noncon show that 7.2% of young, full-time, first degree entrants in 2009/10 did not continue in higher education in 2010/11. The graph below shows the non-continuation rates of young, full-time, first degree entrants from the years 1997/98 to 2009/10:

The percentage of young full-time first degree entrants not continuing in HE after their first year has fallen from 7.6% of 1997/98 entrants to 7.2% of 2009/10 entrants

  5. *The state school indicator is not adjusted to reflect changes in the relative proportions of state and independent school pupils over time.
