Entry Profile : New Information Requirements

Field: UCASAPP UCAS Application Identifier

In order to reflect changes in the UCAS system, HESA will be collecting both the UCAS Personal Identifier and Application code. These fields have been allocated to the Student and Entry Profile entities accordingly. Because of possible parallel running of this with old UCASNUM this field remains a nine-digit field at this stage to cope with old numbers. The new Application Code will only be 4 digits. If this new code can be used by institutions from 2007/08 no parallel running will be required and this field will only be 4 digits.

Rationale: To reflect changes in the UCAS system.

Codes/Descriptors:

A 9-digit alphanumeric code.

You are invited to comment on the practicality of this proposal and the possible need for parallel running.

Field: PTMOT Motivation for Part-time Study

Currently those who study part-time are asked to indicated their motivation for this as part of the DLHE survey. It is now proposed that this question be asked of students at the point of entry to increase coverage of the information. It is acknowledged that this is a different type of information to that normally collected on the record but it is thought that the responses will provide a better understanding of the part-time student population. If the field is included here it will be removed from the DLHE survey.

Rationale: To give a better understanding of what drives the part-time market and for identifying CPD and credit-bearing CE students.

Codes/Descriptors:

  • 1 Current career or job - supported by employer
  • 2 Current career or job - not supported by employer
  • 3 Change in career or job
  • 4 Interest in subject matter
  • 8 Other
  • 9 Not answered

You are invited to comment on the practicality of this proposal.

Field: PARED Parental Education

It has been proposed that the following question be asked of all entrants. HESA are in discussions with UCAS as to the possibility of inclusion of this question on the UCAS application form.

The following question is about your parents’ level of education. This includes natural parents, adoptive parents, step-parents or guardians, who may have brought you up.

Do any of your parents (as defined above) have any higher education qualifications, such as a degree, diploma or certificate of higher education?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Don’t know
  • Information refused

Rationale: This data will allow monitoring of another aspect of widening participation and may be used for the production of performance indicators.

Codes/Descriptors:

  • Yes
  • No
  • Don’t know
  • Information refused

You are invited to comment on the practicality of this proposal.

Field: ARTICLN Articulation

This data will be required for all UK domiciled students at Scottish HEIs studying at first degree level. The field is intended to identify where a student has been admitted to the current instance with advanced standing; the advanced standing having been awarded on the basis of an HND/HNC qualification and the student has not previously studied at degree or post-graduate level.

Institutions should ask students a direct question along the lines of: "Have you ever started a degree level course before?" The outcome of any previous study is not relevant to this particular field.

Rationale: To assess the effectiveness of measures to improve access to degree level study through recruitment to HNC/HND programmes in colleges; the student has to demonstrate that they are moving up, not sideways, i.e. no previous degree level study has taken place.

Codes/Descriptors:

  • 1 Articulating student: Previous HNC obtained at an FEC
  • 2 Articulating student: Previous HNC obtained at an HEI (including UHI)
  • 3 Articulating student: Previous HND obtained at an FEC
  • 4 Articulating student: Previous HND obtained at an HEI (including UHI)
  • 7 First degree level student in Scotland who is/was not articulating in this programme
  • 8 Information sought but not known
  • 9 Not required

You are invited to comment on the practicality of this proposal.
