A survey of HE leavers taken 6 months after graduation, containing detailed information on the activities they are undertaking such as employment/further study type, salary and location of employment; this dataset is available back to 1994/95 however a significant upgrade to the survey for 2002/03 makes comparisons inadvisable over this period. If you would like destinations data for a period before 2002/03 please contact the team for further information.

Like the student datasets we would build the specification in the same way (population followed by academic years and fields), adding in any specific elements from the leavers' stream that you require; for example:

The number of first degree leavers in full-time employment for the academic years 2009/10 - 2010/11 by
Institution
Subject area
Location of employment
Standard Industrial Classification

We also have a longitudinal survey of leavers taken 3.5 years after graduation for additional information on the destinations of HE leavers. The DLHE datasets can be combined with the main student record for additional analysis. A combined dataset would usually be based around the DLHE population but please contact the Information Services team if you require a different base population.

Salary View technical specification

This field captures the reported annual salary to the nearest thousand pounds before tax, for leavers, in full-time or part-time paid work only and voluntary/unpaid work only (excluding those with zero salary). Part-time employees or those employed for less than one year are asked to estimate their pay to a full-time annual equivalent (FTE). Response rates for salary data are quite low up to the 2009/10 academic year. From 2010/11 onwards the number of respondents has increased dramatically.

As we are currently unable to confirm if those employed part-time returned their salary data as an full-time equivalent, this data is usually only supplied for those in full-time employment.

The data can be supplied in grouped bands or as an average cross-tabulated by other fields.

Employer name View technical specification

The employer name fields holds information on the name of the company or organization who the leaver is currently working for. This field has not been quality assured and as a result, some of the entries may be duplicated or incorrectly written. For 2011/12 this field will be fully cleaned and quality checked.

As this is a very detailed field, we would not supply data where the count of leavers for an employer is less than 3 for reasons of data protection.

Employer size View technical specification

This field describes the size of the leavers' employer by the number of people that it employs:

  • 1 to 49
  • 50 to 249
  • 250 or more
  • Not known
Please be aware, as this is a field retuned to us by the leaver, we cannot confirm that the correct number of employees has been returned. For example, if a leaver is employed by a large corporation with numerous branches, they may have returned the number of employees working in their particular branch rather than the company as a whole.

The current maker is based upon a report by Elias & Purcell and can be viewed here. This report utilises SOC 2000 codes to create the groupings and as such, due to the upcoming change with DLHE to SOC 2010, the graduate employment marker will be replaced with a professional/ non-professional marker for 2011/12 DLHE onwards; Professional status consists of all SOC codes starting with 1, 2 or 3.
