Notes
Prior to 2021/22, as part of their latest data submission, HE providers were able to restate previous year's figures. In this table, previous year's figures are based on restated figures (so the 2019/20 figures are taken from the 2020/21 return; the 2018/19 figures are from the 2019/20 return and so on).
Before the 2021/22 academic year, the 'Student start-ups' field was known as 'Graduate start-ups' and included all newly established businesses initiated by recent graduates (within two years). From 2021/22, this field is now referred to as 'Student start-ups', as it represents all new businesses started by students currently registered at the reporting HE provider or who have exited the reporting HE provider with an award within the last two years.
In 2022/23, The University of Cambridge experienced an increase of over £27 billion in 'Estimated external investment received (£ thousands)' in formal spin-offs compared to the previous year. Additional information regarding this can be found on the Data intelligence page.
University of the West of Scotland are missing from the 2022/23 academic year as their data was not finalised in time for publication. Data for this provider will be included in a future update to the HE-BCI open data.

- Policy makers.
Our data is used to regulate the sector, inform policy making, advance understanding of social and economic trends, support student decision making, and enhance public understanding of - and confidence in - the higher education sector.
HE provider
In tables where multiple academic years of data are shown, the provider's name in the latest academic year is used throughout. See Provider mergers and changes for further information.
Restated figures
As part of the most recent data submission, HE providers are able to restate some of the previous year's figures. So, for example, the 2017/18 submission includes restated figures for 2016/17. The notes under each table or chart record whether restated figures are used or not.
