Dear Colleagues

Student Record Coding Manual 2005/06

I am writing principally to confirm the details of a change to be made to the HESA Student Record Coding Manual for 2005/06 (C05011) – the introduction of a new field to report Welsh Baccalaureate.

1) New Field

Field 227/209

Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma

WELBACC

1

Status Compulsory for Welsh domiciled undergraduate students with a COMDATE after 31 July 2005 at institutions in Wales.
Valid Entries
1 Undertook Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma – awarded qualification.
2 Undertook Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma – not awarded qualification.
3 Student did not undertake the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma programme of study.
Description This field identifies those students who undertook a Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma programme of study and also distinguishes those students who were awarded the qualification from those students who were not awarded the qualification.
Notes Optional for Welsh domiciled students at institutions in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma is comprised of two parts: Core and Options. Core – consisting of four components, i.e. Key Skills, Wales, Europe and the World, Work-related Education and Personal and Social Education. Options – courses/programmes currently offered, e.g. GCSE, VGCSE, AS/A levels, VCE (Vocational A levels), GNVQ, NVQ, BTEC. Together, the Core and Options make up the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma, a qualification at Level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework.

For clarification, any students undertaking a programme of study leading to the Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate Diploma, a qualification at Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework, should be coded 3 ‘Student did not undertake the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma programme of study’ in field 227/209, Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma.
Reason Required This field is a requirement of the National Assembly for Wales (NAW) following the introduction of the new Welsh Baccalaureate qualification programme in September 2003. The Welsh Assembly Government has set the target that 25% of students in Wales will be following the Welsh Baccalaureate by 2010.

Monitoring and analysis of the numbers of students entering HE with the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma.

2) Nomenclature

I also draw to your attention three minor nomenclature changes made to update the 2005/06 Student Record Coding Manual, which is now available at: index.php?option=com_manuals&task=show_related_dox&Itemid=220&collid=C05011&y=05

b) In Field 68 Major source of tuition fees (MSTUFEE) Code 17 Arts & Humanities Research Board (AHRB) has been replaced with 17 Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
