Dear Colleagues

Student Record Coding Manual 2006/07

I am writing to advise you of some additional guidance with reference to the Student Record Coding Manual 2006/07.

The guidance is outlined below:

Student Associate Scheme (SAS)

The TDA wish SAS providers to return the 2006/07 SAS cohort as a separate instance in the Student Record. In order to assist in their identification these trainees should therefore be coded as indicated below.

The return of this information for the 2006/07 SAS cohort will allow the TDA to assess the data collection processes for 2007/08. The overall aim of this assessment will be to replace the current aggregate-level return with trainee-level data collected directly through the Student Record. Receiving trainee-level data will greatly increase the accuracy of analysis undertaken through linking records and tracking SAS trainees into ITT and employment.

As a consequence of this request from the TDA we have added a new code to Field 53 Teacher Training Identifier TTCID of code E Student Associate Scheme (SAS).

Students currently enrolled on SAS programmes should be coded as follows:

TTCID = E Student Associate Scheme (SAS)
QUALAIM = 97
QUAL1 = 97
OWNPSD = Level 1 SAS, or Level 2 SAS

Students who have previously undertaken SAS programmes should be coded as follows:

Institutions can identify students who have previously undertaken a SAS programme if the student is currently enrolled on a ITT programme.

SPCSTU = C Student Associate Scheme or D Fast-track (ITT) and previously completed a Student Associate Scheme
TTCID = 1, 6, 7

Field 49 Expected length of study programme SPLENGTH

New guidance note:
Where the option of a sandwich course is available but it is not taken up by a student then SPLENGTH should be revised at the point where the student makes a decision not to take-up the sandwich option, normally by the end of their second year, to reflect the expected length excluding the sandwich year. For example students coded 04 in SPLENGTH and 01 in UNITLGTH in the first year should be recoded 03 in SPLENGTH at the end of the second year if they are not expected to take the sandwich option. This re-coding is required to ensure that the correct cohort of student is identified in the National Student Survey (NSS) target list.

Field 71 Location of study LOCSDY

New guidance note:
Where both D ‘On industrial placement for the year as a whole’ and code F ‘On study year abroad for the year as a whole’ apply in the same academic year, code D ‘On industrial placement for the year as a whole’ should be used in preference to F ‘On study year abroad for the year as a whole’.
