As a result of the new student record 2007/08, there have been a few definitional changes to some of the variables used in the production of the Performance Indicators 2007/08, these are outlined below.

Level of Study / Level of qualification

The qualification aim of course (COURSEAIM) and qualification obtained (QUAL) codes have changed. The new codes are grouped as follows:
  2007/08 COURSEAIM / QUAL codes
Postgraduate D00, L00, L80, E00, E40, E43,
M00, M01, M10, M11, M16, M40, M41, M42, M43, M45,

C20, C30, C41, C42, C43, C80

Low participation indicator (POLAR2)

From 2007/08 onwards, low participation data has not been produced for institutions in Scotland. The low participation measure used in Tables T1, T2 and T3b is based on a UK wide classification of areas into participation bands. The relatively high (in UK terms) participation rate in Scotland coupled with the very high proportion of HE that occurs in FE colleges means that the figures for Scottish institutions could, when viewed in isolation, misrepresent their contribution to widening participation.

Changes in the factors used in the benchmarks 2007/08

Subject Area

From 2007/08 onwards, subject codes JACS2 have been used. There has been little change at subject area level, but the following subjects have moved to a different subject area:

"C230 Plant biotechnology Involves the molecular and microbial manipulation of plants" has moved from 3 Biological Sciences to "J710 Plant biotechnology (crops, trees, shrubs, etc.) Involves the molecular and microbial manipulation of plants" which falls within subject area 9 Engineering & Technology.

"C560 Biotechnology The molecular and microbial bio-organisms for processes such as fermentation and enzyme technology." has moved from 3 Biological Sciences to "J700 Biotechnology The use of biological processes or organisms for the production of materials and services. Biotechnology includes the use of techniques for the improvement of the characteristics of economically important plants and animals and for the development of micro-organisms to act on the environment" which falls within subject area 9 Engineering & Technology.

Entry Qualifications (applicable to tables T1, T2, T7)

From 2007/08 onwards, the following entry qualification groupings have been used. Although these are not strictly comparable with the groupings used previously, analysis has shown that the changes do not have significant impact on the benchmarks.

Entry qualification groups 2007/08 Definitions in terms of HESA fields
A levels / AS Levels / Scottish Highers and no VCEs.

Students with QUALTYPE:GCE Advanced (A), Advanced Subsidiary (A1), GCE AS Level (AS), SQA Highers (H), SQA Advanced Highers (AH), SQA Intermediate 2 (I2), GCE AS Level (Double) (AD) or GCE A Level (Double) (DA) and no VCE Advanced Subsidiary (V1) or VCE Advanced (V), VCE Advanced Double Award (V2) or BTEC qualifications. To get the tariff point scores, sum all of the tariff scores associated with these qualifications and remove any duplicates within subject. To this, add on points for any Welsh Baccalaureates (WB).
