8. A number of HEIs with significant levels of FE provision agreed with the Funding Councils and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to no longer make dual returns to both LSC and HESA. In 2007/08 and 2008/09 these HEIs only made a return for this provision to LSC. In 2009/10 these HEIs only made a return for this provision to the Data Service of the Skills Funding Agency and the Young Person's Learning Agency.
   
   
9. FE students, in the same way as HE students, are counted as an instance of engagement with the institution. As a student can have more than one instance of engagement, the total FE figure will exceed the number of students. Due to the nature of FE programmes, it is likely that the average number of instances per FE student is slightly higher than the average number of instances per HE student.
   
   
10. The University of Cambridge does not classify its bachelor of arts degree, but awards classes in the Tripos (honours) examination usually taken at the end of each academic year. The class of degree recorded in the HESA record in and after 2003/04 is the result obtained in the student's final year.
    
    
11. The University of Portsmouth misreported 360 classifications as third class/pass. Therefore the number of third class/pass awards are artificially inflated. The correct figures are as follows: First Class = 350, Upper second = 1,855, Lower second = 1,630, Third class/pass = 495 and unclassified = 65.
    
    
12. The University of Glamorgan changed its reporting practices for a number of their full-time postgraduate taught students that were active over two reporting years. These students were previously returned as active in their first year but dormant in their second year. For 2009/10 these students are now returned as active in both academic years.
    
    
13. In 2009/10 the University of Cambridge adopted a new system of recording its part-time continuing education students. Students who declared from the outset that they did not intend to study for credit could be identified and excluded from the HESA Student record. The result is a decrease (3,815 to 1,115) in the institution's part-time undergraduate student numbers.
