What's happening in your region?

The positive impact that higher education (HE) has on the economic strength of a region or local area is increasingly in the spotlight. Local skills, enterprise and services strategies are high on the agendas of local planners and HE decision-makers. Understanding the migration of students and graduates into and out of a geographical area plays a big part.

The interactive charts below offer valuable regional insights, using data from our Destinations of Leavers Survey 2014/15. Simply select your region in the drop-down menu and hover over the relevant curves to see the numbers. From left to right, you can measure the number of students that lived in a region before HE, whether they moved away or not to study their HE qualification, and where they were employed after graduation*.

Region:

Home location of students

Term time location of students

Employment location of graduates

This kind of information is a first step towards planning around the movement of students and graduates at local level. It answers questions such as: How many students are moving to your region for HE? Are graduates staying in your region for employment or moving elsewhere? And how does data for your region compare to the rest of the UK?

You will then, no doubt, have more questions, many of which can be answered using the detailed data we hold. You can drill down into measures for your geographical locale or provider, as well as student and graduate demographics, qualifications, employment outcomes, retention metrics, and more with our HE Impact: Local Level Report or a tailored data package to meet your business needs.

*Populations cover those HE graduates in employment who have had a postcode in the selected region during their time in HE. This includes their home address, term-time address and employment location.
