| Notes | HESA are aware that providers, for the reporting requirements for the HMRC, can only state whether a person is 'Male' or 'Female'. It is therefore no longer possible to ask staff one question about sex, as staff who select 'Other' cannot be reported to the HMRC. We would recommend that providers ask staff about sex in two separate surveys at two separate points in time to avoid any confusion. Advance HE has a number of resources relating to gathering information across the protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010.
