Approach to multiple instances for students studying for credit

return to index

Version 1.0 Produced 2007-07-31

The following guidance has been issued by The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)

Students aiming for multiple institutional credits at the same level (UG, PG) should have these included in the same Instance.

Where a student explicitly links one, or more, modules to a Course.COURSEAIM other than institutional credit, or has another formal course aim, and is studying institutional credits at the same level (UG/PG) that can be counted towards the named course aim then this should be subsumed within a single instance even if the student has not indicated that they wish to combine the credits.

The only occasions where a student would have multiple Instances on the student record are:

  1. They have completed one Instance and have started another;
  2. They are studying at two different levels (UG/PG);
  3. They have a Course.COURSEAIM, other than credit, and are studying credit that cannot be counted towards this Course.COURSEAIM;
  4. They have formally linked credit to two different Course.COURSEAIMS.

Scenario c will only occur where the credit is ineligible, normally due to subject or level, to count towards the identified Course.COURSEAIM because either:

  1. The named course regulations restrict the use of the credit,
  2. The student has already included the limit of that type of credit.

In scenario d the student would only have two Instances where there was no common course aim that the credit had been linked to.

Example 1

A student is aiming for credits at level H and at level C. They would have a single instance against a Course.COURSEAIM of H90.

Example 2

A student is aiming for a Mathematics degree and is also studying another module that could be counted towards the Mathematics degree. They would have a single Instance with a Course.COURSEAIM of degree.

Example 3

A student is aiming for credit at level H and at level M. They would have two Instances with Course.COURSEAIM of H90 and M90.

Example 4

A student is studying two modules at level H, they have formally linked each module to a single Course.COURSEAIM, one to a Mathematics degree and the other to a languages degree. They would have two separate Instances, one for the Mathematics degree and one for the languages degree.

Example 5

A student has formally linked a number of credits to a Mathematics degree, in particular they have already linked as many level C credits to the award as the regulations allow. The student then studies additional credit at level C and does not formally link this to the degree. The student would have two separate Instances one for the degree and one for the other credits.

Example 6

A student is studying two modules one linked to a Mathematics degree and one linked to both the Mathematics degree and a languages degree. They would have one Instance linked to the Mathematics degree.
