Fields required for valid response and asked of third party

Version 1.1 Produced 2013-02-28

A 'valid response' is defined as the minimum number of answers required for the DLHE survey. These are indicated in the 'Required for valid response' column. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are expected to submit these 'valid responses' to HESA.

In order for a submission to HESA to be considered valid, a number of fields are required. In some cases fields must be submitted regardless of whether or not a response is provided by the student, as indicated in the 'minimum occurrences' and 'maximum occurrences' within each field. In such cases the HEI is expected to code appropriately.

Within entities there are some cases where 'Required for valid response' is indicated against particular fields (i.e. Employment.EMPCOUNTRY or Employment.EMPPCODE or Employment.EMPPLACE and Study.COURSENAME or Study.SUBJECT), yet the submission of each field is only necessary in conjunction with, or instead of, the other field within the entity. For these fields, 'minimum occurrences' are therefore indicated as 0.

This table summarises the fields that are required for a valid response and the fields that are to be asked of third parties. Further details are in the individual field pages.
