UnitFull-time equivalent (FTE)
Notes

The full-time equivalence (FTE) of teaching staff (including academic support staff) are defined as those staff members involved in teaching at all levels, i.e. FE, UG, and PG. This includes academic teaching staff carrying out activities such as consultancy and third mission work (if carried out by this category of academic teaching staff).

Academic support staff are those directly linked to the administration of academic departments (managers, secretaries, clerical and other support staff). The staff in this category will relate to those used to compile the HESA Finance Statistics Return (FSR) Table 7 'Expenditure by activity' Head 1 'Academic departments' and Head 6 'Research grants and contracts'.

Academic staff associated with departmental libraries should be included under Teaching staff FTE or Research staff FTE and not under Support staff FTE total as would be required by using the HESA FSR. Include contracted-out staff only where office provision has to be made.

Medical school staff who are funded or partially funded by the NHS or equivalent sources, but who are employed by the HEI in some form, should be included under Teaching staff FTE or Research staff FTE.
