Description

The field in this entity contains data about scope 3 carbon emissions from wastewater treatment.

Applicable toEngland Northern Ireland Scotland Wales
Coverage

All higher education providers (HEPs).

Notes

This conversion will be undertaken by HESA.

These are scope 3 emissions in total greenhouse gas emissions (tonnes) associated with the treatment of wastewater.

HESA will calculate this metric by taking the water consumption figures returned under Volume of wastewater and converting to tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents using the relevant carbon conversion factor.

The waste water consumption figures returned under Volume of wastewater will be added to values reported in Water supply grey water and rain water and Water supply borehole extraction.

GHG wastewater = (wastewater volume + grey water volume + rainwater volume + borehole extraction water volume) * CF wastewater

Emission conversion factors

Prior to the 2011/12 Estates Management Statistics record, the conversion factor used was based on carbon dioxide (C02) per unit. However, from the 2011/12 Estates Management Statistics record onwards, the alternative Defra measure of equivalent carbon dioxide (C02e) is used instead. This change accounts for additional Greenhouse Gases, including CH4 and N20.

The Defra conversion factors and guidance provide the conversion factors as well as supplemental information. Furthermore, HEFCE scope 3 carbon emissions guidance was commissioned to help the higher education sector in measuring and reporting scope 3 carbon emissions.
