Notes

Institutions in Wales can only use codes 0, 1, 2 and 5.

Students funded by DELNI on courses leading to eligibility to teach in Northern Ireland should be coded 1 in this field.

Code 1 includes PGCE, BEd, first degree with Qualified Teacher Status and courses leading concurrently to a degree and to a diploma in Education.

Code 2 includes courses leading to Further Education Teacher Qualification and to Nursing and Midwifery Teacher Qualification. FE courses will be specifically identified in Course.ITTPHSC code 31 'Further education'.

Code 5: NCTL and HEFCE have given a working definition of an INSET course as follows:

An INSET/In-service course is one for which the primary (but not necessarily the only) purpose is to improve the effectiveness of teachers, lecturers or trainers. In considering whether this is the purpose of particular course, institutions may wish to consider the content of the course and course literature, including prospectuses and any other marketing material.

Institutions are not expected to return a record to HESA for students on employment-based routes (e.g. GTP, OTT and RTP). The NCTL collects this data via the Employment Based Routes Data Management System (EBRDMS).

Code F (Subject Knowledge Enhancement) instances will not be included in HESA standard populations.

Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) students must be coded 9 'Other NCTL funded provision not elsewhere specified' in this field. MTL students must be identified as such using the M02 code in Course.COURSEAIM field.

School Direct programmes

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) has provided some guidance for instances associated with the School Direct programme:

Code G 'School Direct Training Programme' should be used where the allocation is with a school.

Code H 'School Direct Training Programme (flexible)' should be used as in Code G but when the course is non-standard.

Code L 'School Direct Training Programme (self-funded)' should be used as in Code G but when the allocation is for a Non-DfE funded place and the trainee is employed as an unqualified teacher whilst training.

Code M 'School Direct Training Programme (self-funded - flexible)' should be used as in Code L but when the allocation is for a Non-DfE funded place and the trainee is employed as an unqualified teacher whilst training and the course is non-standard.

Code N 'School Direct Training Programme (salaried)' should be used where the trainee is in receipt of a salary whilst training.

Code P 'School Direct Training Programme (salaried - flexible)' should be used where the trainee is in receipt of a salary whilst training and the course is non-standard.

Codes G-P were originally introduced to permit the return of the funding mechanism alongside the identity of the course as a School Direct programme. It has been proposed that in future the funding element of this information be collected instead through the ‘Major source of tuition fees' field (Instance.MSTUFEE).

For the 2013/14 Student record institutions can opt to use the full range of codes G-P or can elect to use only code G 'School Direct Training Programme' in this field. It has been proposed that Course.TTCID codes H, L, M, N and P are removed from the record for 2014/15.

Whichever of these approaches the institution uses for 2013/14, the completion of Instance.MSTUFEE will additionally be required to indicate whether the instance is either salaried or funded through tuition fees. Validation will restrict any instances which have a Course.TTCID of G-P to the use of codes 01, 02, 03, 04, 52, 53, 54 and 81 in Instance.MSTUFEE. The Instance.MSTUFEE field has also been added to the ITT record for 2014/15 to mirror the Student record.
