Notes

The text completed by the HE leaver in Question 3 Employment.JOBTITLE and Question 4 Employment.JOBDUTIES should be used to determine a valid code from the Standard Occupational Classification for SOCDLHE2010.

The information captured relates to what the HE leaver considers to be their MAIN job.

A response to the question is required if the following codes were used for Q1 (Student.ALLACT): 1 'Working full-time' or 2 'Working part-time'.

It should contain a valid code from the Standard Occupational Classification for the DLHE Record (SOCDLHE2010) or code 00010 'Reserved for instances where occupational information is provided but is inadequate for coding purposes'.

This coding frame was commissioned by HESA as an extension to the SOC2010 coding framework, in order to accommodate a fifth digit of detail for key occupations where more detail was perceived to be required. The report by Elias and Ellison that resulted in this framework may be found here.

In the majority of cases, the four digit SOC2010 code has been retained, with a zero as a suffix, e.g. '2231 Nurses' in SOC2010 is '22310 Nurses' in SOCDLHE2010. For some SOC2010 codes, the four digit code has been 'split' into a number of sub-codes to allow additional detail to be returned where available. These codes are in the range xxxx1-xxxx9. Where coding to a fifth digit of detail is possible, the less detailed SOC2010 form with a zero-suffix is not valid. For example, the four-digit SOC2010 code 2112 'Biological scientists and biochemists' has been implemented as 21121-21129 in SOCDLHE2010. 21120 is not valid. The CASCOT derivation tool will not generate the more generic codes.

The SOC2010 data is used in the Key Information Set data which is published on Unistats in autumn each year. Further information on how this data is used can be found in the guidance document 'SOC2010 for DLHE and KIS'.
