Notes

It is a requirement that NHS contracts (Contract.NHSCON) are returned for contracts with clinical academic status (Contract.CLINICAL coded either 1 'Clinical academic doctors and dentists', 2 'Clinical academic nurses and midwives' or 3 'Clinical academic health professions'). Consequently, clinical academic status can only be returned in Contract.CLINICAL if the member of staff holds an NHS contract (or NHS honorary contract) with an NHS Trust (or equivalent Public Health England for Public Health Academics, Local Authorities for Academic GPs or primary/community healthcare contract).

The majority of clinical academics have substantive paid higher education contracts and honorary unpaid contracts. These contracts should be coded 1 'Higher education provider contract and NHS honorary contract (excluding those with contracts in Nursing and Midwifery purely for the purpose of supervision of placements)'.

Some have separate paid contracts with both a HEP and an NHS employer (often called A+B contracts). These contracts should be coded 2 'Separate higher education provider and NHS contracts'.

A few individuals have genuinely joint HEP/NHS contracts. These contracts should be coded 3 'Joint higher education provider/NHS or primary/community healthcare contracts'.

In each case the contracts together constitute employment in a single job agreed by two employers.

NHS Honorary contracts can be held by clinical academics employed by HEPs in a research and/or teaching capacity, and who also provide services for NHS patients, in NHS facilities.

Change management notesThe labels for valid entries 1, 2 and 3 have changed to 'Higher education provider contract and NHS honorary contract (excluding those with contracts in Nursing and Midwifery purely for the purpose of supervision of placements)', 'Separate higher education provider and NHS contracts' and 'Joint higher education provider/NHS or primary/community healthcare contracts' in line with the references to higher education institution (HEI) being replaced with higher education provider (HEP) and references to institution (as a short-hand for higher education institution) being changed to provider. The change enables HESA to refer collectively to both publicly funded higher education institutions and privately funded alternative providers within its constituency.
