Further guidance on calculating proportions

Version 1.0 Produced 2014-06-26

The matrix below shows the proportion of departments in academic cost centres (column header) against the proportion of academic cost centre from each department (row header).

Each row in the matrix represents a decision that a higher education provider (HEP) makes when allocating a certain member of staff to each academic cost centre. Each column then represents the consequence of the decision that the HEP makes (i.e., allocating a certain number of staff to a particular academic cost centre).

For example, of the five staff in the Department of Human Geography, two members of staff have been allocated in the academic cost centre 124 Geography & environmental studies and three members of staff allocated in the academic cost centre 139 History. There are no members of staff from the Department of Human Geography in any other academic cost centre. All academic members of staff in a department should be allocated to at least one cost centre.

The total number of staff in a particular cost centre can be calculated by totalling the column. There are three members of staff in the academic cost centre 124 Geography & environmental studies; two from the Department of Human Geography and one from the Department of Earth Science.

The percentages highlighted in blue in each row represent proportions of staff allocated from a department to each cost centre. These percentages are the values that willl be submitted in AcademicCostCentres.PROPACC. For example, from the top row the Department of Human Geography have allocated 40% of staff to CC 124 Geography & environmental studies and 60% of staff to CC 139 History. This percentage is calculated as follows: Department of Human Geography, CC 124 Geography & environmental studies - 2/5*100=40%.

The percentages highlighted in yellow in each column follow on from the allocation of staff in departments to academic cost centres, and represent the proportion of staff in each cost centre from each department. These percentages are the values that will be submitted in AcademicCostCentres.PROPDEPT. For example, from the first column 66.7% of staff in the CC 124 Geography & environmental studies have been allocated from the Department of Human Geography and 33.3% of staff have been allocated from the Department of Earth Science. This percentage is calculated as follows: CC 124 Geography & environmental studies, Department of Human Geography - 2/3*100=66.7%.
