UK Postcode for place of employment - Q13
return to field list
This data item identifies the postcode of the HE leaver's place of employment on the census date, and is required for Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) coding.
|Applicable to||England Northern Ireland Scotland Wales|
All HE leavers where Student.ALLACT is coded 1 or 2 and their place of work is in the UK.
|Question||Q13. Where was your place of work and, if in the UK, what is the postcode?|
The information captured is for what the HE leaver considers to be their MAIN job.
A response to the question is required if the following codes were used for Q1 (Student.ALLACT): 1 'Working full-time' or 2 'Working part-time'.
It is important that ALL of the information provided in Employment.EMPNAME, Employment.EMPPLACE, Employment.EMPPCODE, Employment.EMPCOUNTRY, and Employment.MAKEDO is returned to assist in the allocation of a SIC code.
The SIC 2007 valid entries and labels are based on the UK Standard Industrial Classification 2007 (UK SIC 2007) four digit class and five digit subclass levels as identified in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) UK Standard Industrial Classification 2007 web page 'Main volume' (PDF).
For a valid return either Employment.EMPPCODE or Employment.EMPCOUNTRY must be returned.
If nothing is returned for Employment.EMPPLACE, Employment.EMPPCODE, and Employment.EMPCOUNTRY the response will not be valid.
HESA has published a list of default postcodes that can be used when returning Employment.EMPPCODE in cases where the town/city is known, but the postcode is not - Default postcodes for the DLHE return (PDF).
A typical postcode such as GL50 3DA would be coded with a blank in the fifth character position. A postcode such as B1 6SR would have a blank in position 3. The part of the postcode before the space is known as the outward part of the postcode and can be 2, 3 or 4 characters long. The part of the postcode after the space is known as the inward part of the postcode and is a fixed length of 3 characters. The space between the outward and inward parts of the postcode must always be shown as part of the postcode.
There is further guidance on valid postcode formats at: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http:/www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/govtalk/schemasstandards/e-gif/datastandards/address/postcode.aspx. The Quality rules are slightly less strict than that described in UK Government Data Standards Catalogue, as not all parsers will support the full GDSC definition. All postcodes are validated against valid postcodes at COMMIT-stage, using the Office for National Statistics Postcode Directory (ONSPD).
|Required for valid response||Yes (either Employment.EMPPLACE, Employment.EMPPCODE, or Employment.EMPCOUNTRY is required to derive a SIC2007 code).|
