Introduction

Version 1.0 Produced 2015-09-17

Context

The HESA Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record has been collected from 1994/95 onwards from constituent higher education providers (HEPs) in the devolved administrations of the United Kingdom and prior to 2002/03, was known as the First Destinations Supplement.

Information specific to the collection

The DLHE record is collected in respect of successful leavers of the reporting HEP 6 months after their completion of study. The data submitted in the record is obtained through a survey instrument, centrally defined by HESA and locally managed by HEPs. Full details of the coverage of this record can be found in the Coverage of the record.

Data collected

The DLHE record collects data on the personal characteristics of leavers, the details of their current employment and the courses they completed. The detail of the different items collected can be found in the Data Items document located on the DLHE record coding manual landing page.

Data for the DLHE record is collected retrospectively, therefore reporting in March on activity which has taken place in April of the previous year or January of the current year (depending on the individual's date of completing their studies). The HESA data collection system opens at the beginning of March and HEPs are required to have sent a full and verified set of data to HESA by the deadline for last submission in May. There are several deadlines which HEPs must achieve as part of the submission process. It is important that HEPs work to the set deadlines in order to complete the return on time and ensure data quality.

Data collection

All HESA records are collected on the basis of the HESA reporting period, which determines the period of time the data being returned relates to. This ensures consistency across the data streams collected. The reporting period is from 01 August in year 1 to 31 July in year 2. For example, the 2015/16 DLHE record is collected in respect of the Students who completed eligible programmes of study between 01 August 2015 and 31 July 2016.
