return to field list
This field contains data about the Net Internal Area (NIA) of non-residential vacant space. The value can be recorded to three decimal places.
|Applicable to||England Northern Ireland Scotland Wales|
All higher education providers (HEPs).
|Unit||Square metre (m²)|
Vacant space is the NIA within the premises that is currently physically unoccupied for whatever reason.
This would include space that is treated as surplus to requirements and is currently unoccupied.
However, exclude space that is treated as surplus but is still currently occupied, which should be classified under the appropriate category. Include space that is currently awaiting, or in the course of refurbishment or redevelopment, and space that is reserved for future occupation.
Exclude space which is derelict.
Please note that HEPs in England, Northern Ireland or Wales will need to return a value for this field to ensure that the mandatory field Non-residential NIA total is calculated correctly.
Commercial space that can be separately identified as a discrete area together with all associated costs, staff, energy, waste, emissions etc. is considered non-returnable and should be excluded from the Estates management record.
Only in circumstances where commercial space cannot be identified in accordance with the aforementioned conditions is it considered returnable and should therefore be included in the Estates management record (together with all associated costs, staff, energy, waste, emissions etc.).
