Notes

This entity identifies the percentage of a full-time equivalent (FTE) year being undertaken by staff according to their contract of employment over the course of the reporting period 1 August to 31 July. FTE is calculated using a population of staff who were active during the reporting period, not just on a given snapshot date. Where a staff member works across multiple functions, e.g. teaching and research, the FTE should be split pro rata between the appropriate data items.

Staff are determined to be office based if the HEP has provided them with a workstation capable of being used as a permanent place of work.

Staff employed by an external organisation working in a HEPs' space should not be included unless they occupy office space.

Visiting academic staff that have no office requirement should be treated in terms of full-time equivalents. For example, a staff member who typically works seven hours each week on a 'standard' 35 hour week should be classed as 0.2 of an FTE.

Staff that work in space embedded within hospitals should be excluded from the return. However, staff employed by the HEP should be included under the relevant classification, either on a full or joint contract basis.

Distance learning staff should be allocated pro-rata. However, if the proportion of time spent on distance learning is low, all such staff should be included under Teaching staff FTE.

The total FTE figure provided in these fields may not match that supplied in the HESA Staff record Contract.FTE field, as the return of non-academic atypical staff are optional from 2012/13 in the HESA Staff record.

Further information regarding the definition of the HESA Staff record, and the definition of non-academic atypical staff, can be viewed in the Staff Coverage of the record documentation.
