Notes

Students following the same pattern of study on the same course will have the same Instance.SPECFEE.

Code 0 'Standard/prescribed fee' refers to the prescribed fee for students who entered before 2006/07 or the standard variable fee charged by the provider for those who entered in or after 2006/07. This code must be used for students subject to the regulated full fee. Code 0 should be used for part-time students who are subject to regulated fees, including undergraduate and postgraduate part-time initial teacher training students. Part-time students where the provider has complete discretion over the fee charged should be coded 09 'Other fee'.

For students at providers in Scotland, code 0 refers to the standard tuition fees paid by Scottish and other EU students or the deregulated tuition fees applicable to rest of UK students who entered in or after 2012/13.

Special or 'non-standard' fees - in line with the student support regulations, the codes for use with regulated reduced fees are:

Code 1 'Sandwich placement'. For sandwich placements these are an academic year as part of a sandwich course: (i) during which any periods of full-time study are in aggregate less than 10 weeks; or (ii) if in respect of that academic year and any previous academic years of the course the aggregate of any one or more periods of attendance which are not periods of full-time study at the provider (disregarding intervening vacations) exceeds 30 weeks. Students on an outgoing full-year ERASMUS+ year should be returned as code 3 instead, regardless of whether the ERASMUS+ year involves work experience.

Code 2 'Language Year abroad and not full-year outgoing ERASMUS+'. This is an academic year delivered in conjunction with an overseas provider which is not an ERASMUS+ year and: (i) during which any periods of full-time study at the provider in the United Kingdom are in aggregate less than 10 weeks; or (ii) if in respect of that academic year and any previous academic years of the course the aggregate of any one or more periods of attendance which are not periods of full-time study at the provider in the United Kingdom (disregarding intervening vacations) exceeds 30 weeks.

Code 2 should be used for years that meet this definition, regardless of the subject of study.

Code 3 should be used for students on an outgoing full-year ERASMUS+ year at providers in England and other devolved administrations, irrespective of the fee charged. In England, full-year outgoing ERASMUS+ students who started after 01/09/2011 may be charged a tuition fee. This code should be used for students who undertake a combination of placements during the year if one or more of these placements is part of the ERASMUS+ scheme. In Wales, students starting before 01/09/2012 are subject to a zero regulated fee, students starting after this may be charged a tuition fee. In Northern Ireland these students are subject to regulated zero fees. For a full definition of ERASMUS+, please refer to the Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011, as amended (England) and the Education (Student Support) Regulations 2013 (Wales), as amended.

Code 4 'Final year of full-time course lasting less than 15 weeks' and Code 5 'Final year of a full-time course lasting more than 14 weeks but less than 24 weeks' apply to final year students only and should only be used where Instance.MODE is coded 02.

Code 6 'Part-time Initial Teacher Training' includes first degrees leading to QTS, PGCEs, CertEds and DTLLS, and should only be used for students whose course commenced prior to 01/08/2010.

Postgraduate students who are subject to regulated fees should be coded as 0-6 depending on the fees. The only postgraduate students to be recorded as subject to regulated fees are those:

a. On a full-time, or part-time PGCE course, or other postgraduate initial teacher training course, other than those recorded as Code 6.

b. On a full-time course in preparation for a professional examination at postgraduate level, for which a first degree is not a normal requirement for entry. This applies to students on a course leading successively to Parts 1 and 2 of the Royal Institute of British Architects examination, for whom undergraduate-level fees are payable. Such students should be recorded as subject to regulated full fees.

All other postgraduate students should be coded 9 'Other fee'.

Providers are not required to adjust this field to account for individual waived fees.
