return to field list
This data item collects the subject of the study, training or research that the leaver was undertaking on the census date.
|Applicable to||England Northern Ireland Scotland Wales|
All HE leavers where Student.ALLACT is coded 5 or 6.
|Question||Q28. What subject were you studying, training in or researching?|
All of the text (up to a maximum of 200 characters) completed by the HE leaver must be returned.
The information captured relates to what the HE leaver considers to be their MAIN study.
A response to the question is required if the following codes were used for Q1 (Student.ALLACT): 5 'Engaged in full-time further study, training or research' or 6 'Engaged in part-time further study, training or research'.
It is important that ALL of the information provided in Study.COURSENAME and Study.SUBJECT is returned to assist in the allocation of a JACS code.
Completion of Study.COURSENAME or Study.SUBJECT, or both, is required for a valid response. If neither are returned the response will not be valid.
The question of valid characters is significant in this data item since many names include characters with accents and other diacritics that are not supported by the standard ASCII character set.
The character set chosen will support Welsh and Gaelic languages as well as all European and most other languages using a Latin-based character set.
The Unicode charts that list each of the characters in this range can be found on the Unicode web site. The specific sets that are defined here are shown in the following PDF documents:
Files must be encoded with UTF-8 and schema validation will be in place to ensure this. Higher education providers (HEPs) must specify the encoding used in their XML files in the first line of the file (i.e. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>) and to ensure that their files are actually saved with that encoding. If XML files are edited with some text editors and the encoding is not specified or does not match the actual file encoding, there may be problems when submitting these files.
|Required for valid response||Yes (either Study.COURSENAME or Study.SUBJECT is required to derive Study.JACS).|
