Notes

This field forms part of the calculation for Research NIA total, which is mandatory for HE providers in England, Northern Ireland or Wales.

This field records the NIA of offices associated with research space. This includes:

  • research support staff offices,
  • managers, administrators, executives, secretaries, and technicians (if they have identifiable office space),
  • ancillary storage space,
  • the offices of staff who are contracted to undertake research,
  • any attribution of other office space used for research activities.

Where the associated costs, such as waste and energy cannot be separately identified for a commercial space area, NIA for the commercial space area should be included in the EMR under Total NIA commercial space. Providers should return the commercial space area as per other areas under the appropriate space measurement field, in this case Research not offices NIA. Providers should also return the space under Total NIA commercial space. This way, the total commercial space area can be distinguished from Total NIA.
