This records a coherent engagement with the provider aiming towards the award of a qualification(s) or credit, for the purposes of Apprenticeship only where an Individualised Learner Record (ILR) is required.

All instances at providers in England where (Instance.FESTUMK = 1, 3, 4 or 5) and (Instance.PROGTYPE = 25 or Instance.FUNDMODEL = 36) and Institution.ILRGEN = 1.

The ApprenticeshipEngagement entity must be used to contain all engagements for the full duration of the programme. This includes records for that instance that occurred in previous years.

An Engagement record is required for every instance associated with the apprenticeship at the start of the programme. Additional engagements will be required when a student:

1. Returns from an agreed break in learning.
2. Transfers to a different learning aim (Engagement.ENGAIM) which does not require a new instance to be returned.

Where a student returns, on the same learning aim, from an agreed break in learning, the learning aim start remains the same as originally returned but a new engagement start date is returned. As the two dates differ, the HESA system will use the learning aim start to populate the 'original learning start date' in the SFA ILR file created. This field does not otherwise exist in the HESA record.

To record the details of an apprenticeship learning delivery to enable creation of an Individualised Learner Record (ILR) file. An engagement record is required where a change in learning requires a new ILR learning delivery record but the change does not necessitate a new Instance to be created.
