Initial Teacher Training record 2016/17 - Notification log

This document summarises all communications associated with the 2016/17 Initial Teacher Training record, starting with the publication of known changes to the record all the way through to collection closure. Please refer to the Revision history document for full technical list of changes to the specifications.

HESA issue regular communications during the life of a collection:

  • Circulars: announcements to interested parties concerning or issues relating to the collection. Circulars are always made available on the HESA website for later reference, and emailed out to the mailgroup for the collection.
  • Coding manual releases: these document iterative changes to the technical documentation that define the form of the data to be submitted, as well as being a place to host resources associated with collecting that data.

2017-05-09 Coding manual release - version 1.4

A number of guidance updates have been made to the following fields:

2016-10-17 Coding manual release - version 1.3

Version 1.3 of the coding manual includes a revision of the File structure and Data model documents, and a number of minor guidance changes. A minor change has been made to the label of valid entry 2 in Student.ITTSCHMS.

2016-09-08 Coding manual release - version 1.2

Version 1.2 of the coding manual includes valid entry label changes to two codes in Student.DEGCTRY, Student.DOMICILE and Student.NATION. These align the coding frame with recent changes to the National Statistics Country Classification.

Further minor guidance updates have been made to Student.ALLPLACE, Student.CRMODE, Student.ENTRYRTE, Student.FUNDCODE, Student.INITIATIVES, and the 'Further guidance about returning NCTL programmes (excluding EYITT)' document.

2016-07-21 Coding manual release - version 1.1

Version 1.1 of the coding manual includes links to the C16053 validation kit and quality rules, which are now available. Also present is the addition of guidance on Undergraduate Opt-in bursaries to the Student.INITIATIVES field, and the revision of the field descriptions for the fields within the Student.PreviousQualification entity.

This circular provides information on the 2016/17 ITT record collection process.

2016-05-19 Coding manual release - version 1.0

Version 1.0 of the coding manual includes the full technical specification of the record for the 2016/17 reporting period. The schema, field specifications, valid entries, and guidance are all now available.

The changes announced previously for this collection in Circular release 16/02 - March and Circular release 16/01 - February (such as the introduction of new fields) have been implemented in the specification.

As previously announced, Student.DISCFUND and Student.MSTUFEE have been removed from the HESA ITT record, whilst eight new fields have been added for various other requirements. These include:

  • Student.DOMICILE to collect the country code of the student's permanent home address prior to entry to the course.
  • Student.ENTRYRTE to describe the route by which the student has accessed Initial Teacher Training provision.
  • Student.NATION to collect the student's country of legal nationality.
  • Student.NATIOND to collect the national identity of the student.
  • Student.NQTEMAIL to collect email addresses for trainees on Initial Teacher Training courses.
  • Student.QLAIM to describe the qualification aim of the Initial Teacher Training course and is intended to record the qualification that will be attained as a result of successful completion of studies.
  • PreviousQualification.BURSFLAG to indicate which qualification is being referenced for the bursary level calculation.
  • PreviousQualification.FIRSTDEG to indicate which qualification is a student's first degree.

Eight fields have been moved from the Institution.Student entity to the new Student.PreviousQualification entity to enable multiple qualifications to be returned.

Furthermore, a number of valid entry changes have been made within Student.INITIATIVES, Student.ITTAIM, Student.ITTSCHMS, Student.MODE, Student.TTCID, PreviousQualification.DEGCTRY, and PreviousQualification.DEGEST. A number of guidance changes have been made across the record, including an update to Student.DISALL specifying that the field relates solely to DSA funded by either the Student Loans Company (SLC) or Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS).
