Total energy consumption

return to field list
Typefield
Short nameEECTOT
Description

This field contains data about the total energy consumption for the whole estate. The value can be recorded to three decimal places.

Applicable toEngland Northern Ireland Scotland Wales
Coverage

All higher education providers (HEPs).

UnitKilowatt hour (kWh)
Notes

This field is mandatory for HE providers in England, Northern Ireland or Wales.

This field is the sum total of the component fields:

Energy consumption biofuels
Energy consumption biomass
Energy consumption burning oil
Energy consumption coal (industrial)
Energy consumption compressed natural gas
Energy consumption electricity consumed from onsite CHP
Energy consumption fuel oil
Energy consumption gas oil
Energy consumption grid electricity
Energy consumption heat consumed from onsite CHP
Energy consumption liquefied natural gas
Energy consumption liquefied petroleum gas
Energy consumption lubricants
Energy consumption natural gas excluding that used as input for a CHP unit
Energy consumption onsite photovoltaic
Energy consumption onsite wind
Energy consumption other onsite renewables
Energy consumption other petroleum gas
Energy consumption petroleum coke
Energy consumption steam and hot water

The sum total does not include Energy consumption natural gas used as input for a CHP unit (EECNGCHP).

It is expected that each of the component fields listed above for the sum total can be linked to non-residential and residential space. Providers should therefore allocate the emissions recorded in the fields above to residential or non-residential space respectively. The provider then records the allocations in the following fields Non-residential energy consumption total (ENRECT) and Residential energy consumption total (ERECTOT).

It is therefore expected that:
Non-residential energy consumption total (ENRECT) +
Residential energy consumption total (ERECTOT) +
Equals
Total energy consumption (EECTOT)

HESA will use this calculation in data quality checks to determine whether providers have calculated these fields correctly.
