Notes

This field records the training bursary awarded to the student. Bursary levels will vary according to the level of study of the student, their degree classification if applicable and the subject specialism in which they wish to train to teach.

A postgraduate student will only hold one bursary – either the 'Core Bursary Award' (codes 7, 8, 9 or A) or a 'Scholarship' (code 4). Undergraduate students on a course in maths, physics, or maths and physics which leads to QTS can qualify for an 'Undergraduate bursary' (code B).

Further guidance on the types of bursary, and the amounts available, may be found in the NCTL's 'Training Bursary Guide'.

Notes:

  1. Honorary doctoral degrees are not recognised by QAA as academic qualifications.
  2. May include Integrated Masters.
  3. These do not include the MA granted on application by the University of Oxford or Cambridge. Please see the Training Bursary Guide for more details.
  4. Aegrotats are degrees awarded in lieu of illness if a trainee was unable to sit their final exams.
  5. Previously, students who did not achieve a 2:2 or above in their degree were entitled to a Tier 4 bursary (Instance.BURSLEV=A) in some circumstances. From 2017/18 these bursaries are no longer available. It is therefore not expected that Instance.BURSLEV=A would be returned in the C17053 except in some rare cases where a student may have deferred from a previous year and yet receive their bursary in the current reporting year.
  6. Postgraduate bursary levels should be returned in the reporting year that the student received their bursary only. If the student did not receive a bursary in the current reporting year, 6 'No Bursary awarded' must be returned. Guidance on returning Undergraduate bursaries can be found below.
*or equivalent.

Bursaries at undergraduate level

Code B ‘Undergraduate bursary’ is currently the only bursary available to those studying at undergraduate level, if the qualification is in the subject of maths, physics or maths and physics (or additionally computing and languages if the student is on an Undergraduate Opt-in programme) and leads to qualified teacher status (QTS).

This bursary is awarded in the final (or penultimate and final) year of the student’s course, but it is expected the valid entry will be returned in every year for the student to be eligible.

Undergraduate Opt-In

The Undergraduate bursary is applicable to students choosing to undertake the Undergraduate Opt-in scheme (Student.ENTRYRTE=09). These are students who have chosen to ‘opt-in’ to an ITT course leading to QTS who would then be eligible to receive an Undergraduate bursary in their final (or penultimate and final) year of an Undergraduate course. Those students opting in to a Bachelor’s course will be entitled to a £9,000 bursary, Master’s opt-in students will be entitled to an £18,000 bursary.

They will need to be returned in the ITT record from the year they commence an ITT course. Providers will need to ensure that the correct Student.YEARPRG is returned to reflect this, which will indicate the number of years the student has been studying an Undergraduate course for.

The table below contains examples of how Undergraduate Opt-in students would be coded.

Course Model Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5
Bachelors Opt-in year 1 of 3
Bachelors Opt-in year 2 of 3 No ITT record
Bachelors Opt-in year 2 of 4 No ITT record

Bachelors Opt-in in year 2 of 5 No ITT record
Masters opt-in year 2 of 4 No ITT record
