DescriptionThis entity collects any restrictions on the use of the student's contact details and any restrictions on how a student wishes to be contacted.

Students at providers in England where Institution.ILRGEN = 1 and any (Instance.PROGTYPE = 25 or Instance.FUNDMODEL = 36).


For each contact preference type recorded (ContactPreference.CONTPREFTYPE), there can be one or more contact preference codes (ContactPreference.CONTPREFCODE) recorded.

For example: A student who has indicated that they agree to be contacted about courses or learning opportunities and who agrees to be contacted by post or phone, would return the combinations RUI6, PMC4 and PMC5.

The contact preferences indicated here do not apply in the following circumstances:

  • Where providers have to contact students to collect destination and progression data, except where RUI 4 or 5 have been recorded.
  • As part of the ESF 2014 to 2020 Programme. ESF funded learners and Adult skills funded learners (including 16-18 apprentices) who could be used as a match may be contacted as part of a sampled survey to inform the effectiveness of the programme.

Change management notes The valid combinations of Contact preference code (ContactPreference.CONTPREFCODE) and Contact preference type (ContactPreference.CONTPREFTYPE) have changed for 2018/19. Guidance has been updated to ensure that contact preference is on an opt-in basis as opposed to an opt-out basis.
