This field identifies apprenticeship students in England and the different type of programmes and funding they have.

In usage of this field be aware that where a provider has used the HESA system to produce ILR files for submission to the ESFA, two Instances were returned. One programme 'wrapper' instance representing the entire apprenticeship programme and a component instance for each learning aim.

Apprenticeship qualifications comprise a number of component aims accompanied by a 'wrapper' programme aim. Each component aim is a qualification aim in its own right, and coded using the standard range of fields and valid entries. The programme aim, however, is not associated with a single qualification.

A programme 'wrapper' instance can be identified throughout the HESA record, one way is with Instance.AIMTYPE code 1 'Programme aim'. The standard registration population can also be used as it excludes the 'wrapper' programme aim of apprenticeship students.
