Context

HESA has been collecting data on the activities and views of higher education graduates since 1994/95. Between 1994/95 and 2001/02, this was collected via the First Destinations record. From 2002/03 until 2016/17 it was collected via the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record which included an early survey (at six months after graduation) and a longitudinal survey (LDLHE) record (at 3.5 years after graduation).

HESA ran a major review on the data it collects on graduates (referred to as the NewDLHE review). This has led to the introduction of the Graduate Outcomes record from 2017/18 onwards.

The first survey for C18072 cohort A went live on 2 December 2019.

Graduate Outcomes

The Graduate Outcomes record includes a survey of graduates around 15 months after they complete their studies. This survey is delivered by HESA with a number of specialist suppliers. To undertake this survey, providers will need to return up-to-date, accurate and comprehensive contact details for all of their graduates who fall into the surveyable population.

Data collection

The Graduate Outcomes Survey Results record provides the response data collected during the surveying of graduates across four cohorts.

Which cohort a graduate falls into will determine when their survey data will be available. View an overview of survey timings.

The reporting period is from 01 August in year 1 to 31 July in year 2. This means the 2018/19 Graduate Outcomes Survey Results record is in respect of students who completed eligible programmes of study between 01 August 2018 and 31 July 2019 and who actually completed the survey (or the minimum response required).

Data dissemination

The survey response data is available from the Graduate Outcomes provider portal to those with the Survey Results User role in the Identity System.

The data provided in the provider portal is a raw feed for all open cohorts. The data will be dynamic, updated in the provider portal on a regular basis and accessible to colleagues who hold the Survey Results User role. It is therefore subject to change until the end of the collection.

Providers should refer to the C18072 coding manual for clarity on the use of this data before the end of the collection. External use is embargoed until HESA’s first release of Graduate Outcomes data which is expected in Spring 2021 in the form of a Statistical Bulletin.
