Total scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions

return to field list
Typefield
Short nameE12CET
Description

This field contains data about the total scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions for the whole estate. The value can be recorded to three decimal places.

Applicable toEngland Northern Ireland Scotland Wales
Coverage

All higher education providers (HEPs).

UnitKilograms of equivalent carbon dioxide (kg CO2e)
Notes

This field is mandatory for HE providers in England, Northern Ireland or Wales.

Where your organisation generates electricity from 'owned or controlled' renewable sources backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) within the UK:

  • You should account for renewable electricity generated at zero emissions in Scope 1
  • You should account for all electricity purchased (for example, supplied from national grid or third party for a consideration) for own consumption from the national grid or a third party at the 'Grid Rolling Average' factor (irrespective of the source of the electricity).

This field is the sum total of the component fields:

Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions biofuels
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions biomass
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions burning oil
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions coal (industrial)
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions compressed natural gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions fuel oil
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions gas oil
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions grid electricity
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions liquefied natural gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions liquefied petroleum gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions lubricants
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions natural gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions onsite photovoltaic
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions onsite wind
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions other onsite renewables
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions other petroleum gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions petroleum coke
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions steam and hot water
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles aviation spirit
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles aviation turbine fuel
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles biofuels
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles diesel
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles liquefied petroleum gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles petrol

It is expected that each of the component fields listed above (but not those for vehicle emissions) can be linked to non-residential and residential space. Providers should therefore allocate the emissions recorded in the fields above to residential or non-residential space respectively. The provider then records the allocations in the following fields: Non-residential scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions total and Residential scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions total. Vehicle emissions must not be allocated to the residential or non-residential total fields, as this ensures that the scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions from vehicles are not double counted within Total scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.

It is therefore expected that:
Total scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions will equal
Non-residential scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions total +
Residential scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions total +
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles aviation spirit
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles aviation turbine fuel
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles biofuels
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles diesel
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles liquefied petroleum gas
Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions vehicles petrol

This calculation is also represented in the diagram below. HESA will use this calculation in data quality checks to determine whether providers have calculated these fields correctly.
