Additional information

Ethnicity coding is required for all UK domicile students. For analysis purposes this includes Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. This field derives the Student record field Student.ETHNIC or Student Alternative record field StudentEquality.ETHNIC into common analysis groupings, and derives non-UK domicile students as NA 'Non-UK domicile'. In cases where domicile cannot be determined, such students are derived to UN 'Domicile not known'.

99 'Not known' includes those UK domiciled students for whom either ethnicity was not known or those who refused to give information.

For the purpose of this field White includes the codes for White - Scottish, Irish Traveller, Gypsy or Traveller and Other White background.

Other (including mixed) includes Mixed - White and Black Caribbean, Mixed - White and Black African, Mixed - White and Asian, Other Mixed background, Arab and Other Ethnic background. The grouping of Arab with Other Ethnic background is consistent with the approach used by the Office for National Statistics for the presentation of ethnic group data.

Definitions:

XHOOS01 = 1 UK domiciled student
XHOOS01 = 2 Non-UK domiciled student
XHOOS01 = 3 Domicile not known

Technical Specification

As the Student record contains more valid entries in ETHNIC than the Student Alternative record, more XETHNIC01 valid entries can thus be derived. Consequently, the technical specifications across the two collections deal with different cohorts of possible entries.
