HE-BCI record 2021/22 - Notification log
This document summarises all communications associated with the 2021/22 HE-BCI collection, from first publication of known changes to the record through to collection closure. Please refer to the revision history document for full technical list of changes to the specifications.
HESA issue regular communications during the life of a collection:
- Circulars: announcements to interested parties concerning or issues relating to the collection. Circulars are always made available on the HESA website for later reference, and emailed out to the mailgroup for the collection.
- Coding manual release overviews: these document iterative changes to the technical documentation that define the form of the data to be submitted, as well as being a place to host resources associated with collecting that data.
2023-06-14 Manual release - version 1.5
This release of the coding manual includes the following:
- The quality rules have been added under the 'Submission process and quality assurance' section of the coding manual.
2022-11-22 Manual release - version 1.4
This release of the coding manual includes the following:
- Guidance has been updated for the coverage of the record under 'Scope of the HE-BCI record'.
- The 21032 HE-BCI Part B template under the 'Downloadable files' section has been updated for clarification.
2022-10-12 Manual release - version 1.3
This release of the coding manual includes the following:
- Guidance has been updated for the coverage of the record under 'Scope of the HE-BCI record'.
- The derived field specifications have been added under the 'Downloadable files' section.
- The 21032 HE-BCI Part B template has been added under the 'Downloadable files' section.
- The support guides have been added under the 'New to HESA or having problems?' section.
2022-07-20 Manual release - version 1.2
This release of the coding manual includes the following:
The data collection schedule has been added, informing of the collection dates for the 2021/22 collection.
2022-03-04 Manual release - version 1.1
This release of the coding manual includes the following:
Guidance has been updated for the coverage of the record under 'Scope of the HE-BCI record'.
Guidance has been updated for HE-BCI Part B Table 1 - Research related activities under Head 1: Collaborative research involving public funding.
Guidance has been updated for HE-BCI Part B Table 2 - Business and community services under Sub-head 3f: Total learner days of CPD/CE courses delivered.
Guidance has been updated for HE-BCI Part B Table 4 - Intellectual property (IP) under Head 2: Licence numbers (including licencing of patents, copyright, design registration and trade marks).
2022-01-26 Manual release - version 1.0
This is the first release of the manual, which includes the full suite of updated guidance for the 2021/22 collection.
The changes published in version 1.0 of the C21032 HE-BCI coding manual are reflective of guidance review discussions held with the Statutory Customers in order to ensure the guidance remains current and fit-for-purpose.

- HE-BCI Part B Table 2 - Business and community services
- HE-BCI Part B Table 4 - Intellectual property (IP)
Guidance changes have also been made within the coverage of the record.
