Student Alternative record 2021/22 - Notification log

This document summarises all communications associated with the 2021/22 Student Alternative collection, starting with the publication of known changes to the record in January 2021 all the way through to collection closure in October 2022. Please refer to the Revision history document for full technical list of changes to the specifications.

HESA issue regular communications during the life of a collection:

• Circulars: announcements to interested parties concerning or issues relating to the collection. Circulars are always made available on the HESA website for later reference, and emailed out to the mailgroup for the collection.
• Coding manual release overviews: these document iterative changes to the technical documentation that define the form of the data to be submitted, as well as being a place to host resources associated with collecting that data.

2022-10-05 Coding manual release overview - version 1.11

Version 1.11 of the coding manual includes the following change:

• First release of the Understanding the NSS reports document.

2022-09-14 Coding manual release overview - version 1.10

Version 1.10 of the coding manual includes the following change:

• Update of dates falling after 19 September 2022 in the data collection schedule.

2022-08-10 Coding manual release overview - version 1.9

Version 1.9 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of the following documentation:

• File structures for National Student Survey (NSS).
• Nil return sign-off form.

2022-06-23 Coding manual release overview - version 1.8

Version 1.8 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of File structures for downloadable files:

• File structures for unistats.

Changes to fields and entities:

• Coverage updates have been made to the entity FinancialSupport.
• Guidance updates have been made to the field Course.AWARDBOD.

2022-05-05 Coding manual release overview - version 1.7

Version 1.7 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of File structures for downloadable files:

• File structures for data supply files.
• File structures for Expected instance population.

Changes to fields and entities:

• The reason required has been updated for the entity DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation.
• Guidance updates have been made to the entities DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation and FinancialSupport as well as to the fields EntryProfile.CRDPTSTU, EntryProfile.CRDSCM, EntryProfile.PREVINST, InstancePeriod.MODE, and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

The Derived field specifications have been updated since the last coding manual release, more detail can be found in the Derived field revisions page.

2022-03-23 Coding manual release overview - version 1.6

Version 1.6 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

The following documentation has been added under the 'Submission process and quality assurance' section:

• HESA XML data entry tool.
• How to use the HESA XML data entry tool.
• Quality rules.
• Submit data to HESA.
• Validation kit.

• Additional guidance has been added to the Data Collection Schedule.
• An appendix has been updated in the Derived field specifications more detail in the derived field revisions page.
• The C21054DataTypes.xsd schema has been updated.
• Guidance changes have been made to the fields Course.COURSEAIM and EntryProfile.QUALENT3.

2022-03-04 Coding manual release overview - version 1.5

Version 1.5 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• First release of the Derived field specifications for this collection, added under the 'Data specification' section.
• Valid entry changes have been made to the following fields QualificationsOnEntry.QUALGRADE and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2022-02-09 Coding manual release overview - version 1.4

Version 1.4 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• Guidance updates and date changes have been made to the Data Collection Schedule.
• Guidance update has been made to the following field Instance.RSNEND, Student.HUSID and Student.SSN.
• Valid entry changes have been made to the field QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2021-12-23 Coding manual release overview - version 1.3

Version 1.3 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• The 'Validate data locally using validation kit' date has been amended within the Data Collection Schedule.
• Guidance update has been made to the following field InstancePeriod.INITIATIVES.
• Minimum occurrences and guidance has been updated for field StudentEquality.SEXID.
• New valid entries added to the field QualificationsOnEntry.QUALGRADE, QualificationsOnEntry.QUALSBJ and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2021-10-18 Coding manual release overview - version 1.2

Version 1.2 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

• Guidance changes have been made to the fields FinancialSupport.FINTYPE and Instance.LOCSDY.

2021-09-10 Coding manual release overview - version 1.1

Version 1.1 of the coding manual includes the following changes:

First release of further guidance:

• Further guidance on returning postgraduate students to the Student Alternative Record
• Understanding student continuity and the UHN link.

Changes to fields and entities:

• Coverage update has been made to the field EntryProfile.PARED.
• Guidance and coverage updates have been made to the field EntryProfile.CARELEAVER.
• Guidance updates have been made to the fields DeliveryOrganisationAndLocation.PCODELOC, EntryProfile.APELCRD, EntryProfile.CRDPTSTU, InstancePeriod.LOCSDY, Instance.MODE, InstancePeriod.STULOAD, Student.SSN and QualificationsOnEntry.QUALGRADE.
• Guidance and valid entry changes have been made to the field QualificationsOnEntry.QUALTYPE.

2021-07-30 Coding manual release overview - version 1.0

Version 1.0 of the coding manual includes the following:

• First issue of the following schemas C21054.xsd, C21054DataTypes.xsd and C21054CodeLists.xsd for the 2021/22 collection, added under the 'Data specification' section of the coding manual.
• Coverage updates have been made to the fields EntryProfile.CARELEAVER and EntryProfile.PARED.
• The coverage has been updated for the entity FinancialSupport.
• Guidance changes have been made to the field Instance.FUNDCODE.
• A new valid entry has been added to the field QualificationsOnEntry.QUALSIT.

For reference, please find a link to the notification of changes. This documents the changes which have been implemented for 2021/22 and was issued to contacts in July 2021.
