Unistats record 2021/22 - Notification log
This document summarises all communications associated with the 2020/21 Unistats collection, from first publication of known changes to the record through to collection closure in July 2021. Please refer to the revision history document for full technical list of changes to the specifications.
HESA issue regular communications during the life of a collection:
- Circulars: announcements to interested parties concerning or issues relating to the collection. Circulars are always made available on the HESA website for later reference, and emailed out to the mailgroup for the collection.
- Coding manual release overviews: these document iterative changes to the technical documentation that define the form of the data to be submitted, as well as being a place to host resources associated with collecting that data.
2021-12-15 Coding manual release - version 1.5
Version 1.5 includes the following:
An updated version of the subcontractual and collaborative provision document has been added to the coding manual.
Updates have been made to the accreditation information table on the 2021-11-24.
Further to the release of version 1.5, additional updates have been made to the accreditation information table on the 2022-02-28. Further information regarding the updates can be found on the accreditation table revision history page.

The 'Application for inclusion' link has been updated under the 'Application process' section within the Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs) and course accreditation.
The 'Update Discover Uni website with 2021 dataset' section has been updated to October 2021 within the data collection schedule.
The discover uni widget user guide has been released under the 'Onward use of data' section.
The unistats dataset file structure and description has been released under the 'Supporting documentation' section.
The unistats output schema has been released under the 'Data specification' section.
The C21061DataTypes.xsd has been updated to be more permissive in the characters which can be returned for HESACOURSEID.
2021-06-07 Coding manual release - version 1.2
Version 1.2 includes the following:
The following documentation has been added to the coding manual:
Guidance under the 'Missed deadlines' section has been updated within the data collection schedule.
Guidance for Welsh FE Colleges with provision they do not report in the HESA Student Record has been updated within the coverage.
Further guidance has been added defining 'distance learning' where students are not in attendance for the whole of their course within KISCourse.DISTANCE.
The link to the Office for Students web site page from where a list of valid LDCS codes can be downloaded has been updated within KISCourse.LDCS.
Guidance and valid entries have been updated for KISCourse.TTCID.
Updates have been made to both the accreditation information table and list of KIS course aims on the 2021-06-02.
2021-04-21 Coding manual release - version 1.1
Version 1.1 includes the following:
The following documentation has been added to the coding manual:

- HESA XML data entry tool
- How to use the HESA XML data entry tool
- List of KIS course aims
- Nil return sign-off
- Quality rules
- Validation kit download
- Validation overview
Guidance updates have been made to KISCourse.TITLE and KISCourse.TITLEW.
2021-03-04 Coding manual release - version 1.0
Version 1.0 includes the following:
- The first release of documentation for Unistats record 2020/21.
- Data collection schedule.
- Data requirements for new courses.
- Linking to other datasets.
- Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs) and course accreditation.
- Publication arrangements.
- Years to which fields relate.
- References to DLHE have been replaced with Graduate Outcomes in KISCourse.HECOS, KISCourse.KISMODE, KISCourse.LDCS and KISCourse.TTCID.
- Reference to 'AP Student' has been replaced with 'AP Student record (now called Student Alternative from C19054)' in HESACourse.HESAYEAR.
- Further guidance has been added in ILRAims and HESACourse.
- Guidance has been updated for C21061 regarding KISCourse.KISAIM valid entries within KISCourse.TITLE and KISCourse.TITLEW.
- Minimum occurrences has been updated to 1 for KISCourse.TITLE (this has also been updated in C21061.xsd).
- The C21061DataTypes.xsd has been updated.
