Uniquely Identified by

Each Module subject (ModuleSubject) is uniquely identified by:

Applicable to England Northern Ireland Scotland Wales
Coverage All Modules at providers in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Optional for all Modules at providers in England.
Notes

Providers in England are not required to return Module subject data but can do so optionally.

Providers must return at least one and no more than 3 occurrences of module subject per Module. An entry is required for each subject area of study of the module regardless of whether this subject area of study is taught by the reporting provider or not.

The module subject(s) must represent the subject(s) taught in the module, and should represent directly, or relate very closely to, the Module Title.

If the subject(s) of a given Module change in any of the following ways, a new Module would be required to be returned:

  • The majority subject changes

  • A new subject is introduced with a ModuleSubject.MODPROPORTION of more than 5%

  • A subject with a ModuleSubject.MODPROPORTION of more than 5% is removed

  • The proportions of the subjects within a Module change by more than 5%.

If the subjects change within these parameters, a new Module is not required and the ModuleSubject(s) are updated to record the new subject(s).

For example, a Module has two subjects of History and Politics with proportions of 25% and 75% respectively:

  • The proportions change to be 30% History and 70% Politics: a new Module is not required as the proportion change is 5% or less.

  • The proportions change to 60% History and 40% Politics: a new Module is required as the proportions have changed by more than 5% and there is a new majority subject.

  • The subjects change to be History (20%), Politics (60%) and Sociology (20%): a new Module is required as a new subject has been introduced with a proportion of more than 5%.

Additional guidance regarding assigning subject codes can be found in the HECoS implementation guide.
