Notes

Certain valid entries exist in both this field and Course.INITIATIVEID. In this case the initiative should be returned at the level at which it applies. If the initiative applies to all students on a Course, it should be returned in CourseInitaitive. If it varies on a student by student basis, it should be returned in StudentInitiatives for each applicable Engagement. For example you could have one course with different mode or length. Some students might be on an eligible pathway and others not thus the requirement to record this information on a student level.

001 Abridged ITT course (England only)

Code 001 'Abridged ITT course', is to be used where a student is taking a course that has been shortened, but that is not classed as the Assessment Only Route.

004 Higher/Degree Apprenticeship

A Higher/Degree Apprenticeship incorporates a work-based learning programme and leads to a nationally recognised qualification at NVQ levels 4, 5, 6 or 7 or equivalent. Code 004 is used to identify students in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland for whom the StudentRegistration comprises any part of the study component of a Higher/Degree Apprenticeship Framework or Standard.

For providers in Wales this should be used to identify Higher Apprenticeships at levels 4 and 5. Degree level apprenticeships should be recorded as 020 HEFCW funded degree apprenticeship scheme where they are funded through this scheme.

  • Part-time for up to 3 years, where no equivalent full-time course exists.

Doctoral

  • Full-time or part-time, lasting 3 to 8 academic years,

  • Taught or research-based, or a combination of both,

  • Provided by a UK university with research degree awarding powers.

If more than one provider delivers the course and one is overseas, students may still be eligible for the Postgraduate Doctoral Loan so long as:

  • The UK Provider is the lead institution

  • At least 50% of the study time over the whole course in the UK

This initiative should only be returned where Qualification.QUALCAT = M0003, M0004, M0006, M0007 or where Course.FUNDLEVEL = 02 and CurriculumAccreditation.ACCREDITATIONID = 00103.

006 Q-Step

Funded by the Nuffield Foundation, ESRC and Office for Students, Q-Step has been developed as a strategic response to the shortage of quantitatively-skilled social science graduates. Students who are enrolled on programmes that are funded as part of the Q-Step programme or derive a benefit from an activity that is funded (e.g., training, work placements), should be flagged using code 006 'Q-Step'.

Valid entry 016 is to be used in the case of students on one of the places for which SFC have provided additional funding to increase levels of articulation, these students will study at a further education college for the first one or two years of their programme, but will have associate student status with the provider during this time.

This scheme funds places rather than students directly; as a consequence, providers may allow another student to be substituted onto the course if the original articulating student fails to continue. Where a student withdraws from the programme and is thus substituted with an alternative student, the new student should be recorded as at the point they are substituted in i.e. the StudentInitiatives.INITIATIVEID will need to reflect the latest position at the point of substitution. The SFC recommends that good communication between partners is essential when it comes to identifying these additional places.
