Optional for each unit of study at Approved providers in England or where Engagement.INCOMINGEXCHANGE exists or where Qualification.QUALCAT starts with D or L.
Providers in England that are registered with the Office for Students in the 'Approved' category are not required to return Module data but can do so optionally.
Providers in England that are registered with the Office for Students in the 'Approved (fee cap)' category must return Module data.

Module data is also optional for all postgraduate research and incoming exchange students.
Although the term 'Module' is used to describe this entity, the definition covers any discrete unit of learning and/or research. The aim of collecting this information is to provide a greater level of detail about the student's activity than can be ascertained from the course-level information. Specifically, this includes the detail of subjects studied during the year, and credit scheme information.
In cases where students are studying within academic structures that are not 'modular', the module could be defined as a single unit to cover a year's worth of activity on a course.

HE providers in England and Northern Ireland
APEL modules should not be returned in the Student record, this is in order to prevent confusion over genuine and APEL modules and to avoid FTE being allocated incorrectly. Please note this affects only OfS and DfE(NI) funded providers.
