Back to Student

Key Value
Name Fee method
Short name FEEMETHOD
Part of Student course session (StudentCourseSession)
Description This field records where the StudentCourseSession will have fees recorded in both StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT and ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT.
Applicable to England Northern Ireland Scotland Wales
Coverage All StudentCourseSesions where applicable
Notes

The StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT and ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT fields record the fees for a StudentCourseSession or Module Instance prior to any bursaries, discounts or waivers.

If there is one fee for the full StudentCourseSession, the StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT field would be returned to record this fee.

If fees are charged on a modular basis, the ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT field would be returned for each ModuleInstance to record these modular fees.

There may be some cases where returning both StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT and ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT are required, see examples below. In these cases this field must be returned to indicate that both entities will be being returned.

Providers returning both entities must ensure that fees are not being double counted. The total fee for a StudentCourseSession would be derived based on the total of all StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT and ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT values returned for a StudentCourseSession. So whilst a mixture of StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT and ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT can be returned for a single StudentCourseSession, any given part of the fee must not be recorded in both.

Examples

Example 1

A provider runs a programme where fees are charged on a modular basis but there is also a registration fee of 1000 charged for each year of the programme. This student studies one module in each of the three reference periods the StudentCourseSession spans, with a charge of 500 each.

The FEEMETHOD field would be required to be returned, the StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT field would be returned indicating the registration fee and each ModuleInstance would have a ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT returned to indicate the modular fee. The StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT would be returned throughout the StudentCourseSession and the ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNTs would be returned in the reference period(s) in which the module is studied.

ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT (a)500
ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT (b)500
ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT (b)500

The total fee for the StudentCourseSession would be derived as 2500.

The return of the FEEMETHOD field would indicate that both the StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT and ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT fields are intended to be returned and the fees are not being double counted.

Example 2

A StudentCourseSession has one fee for the full year of 5000. After the first semester, a student studying on this StudentCourseSession needs to retake a module and so is charged an additional fee for the module retake of 500.

At the start of the StudentCourseSession, only the StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT would be returned with the ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT being returned in the reference period(s) in which the module is studied.

FieldReference period 1Reference period 2Reference period 3
StudentCourseSession.FEEMETHOD0101
StudentCourseSession.SCSFEEAMOUNT500050005000
ModuleInstance.MIFEEAMOUNT500500

The total fee for the StudentCourseSession would be derived as 5500.

The 500 charged for the module retake is returned in reference periods 2 and 3 as the module spans both reference periods.

The StudentCourseSession.FEEMETHOD field is returned from reference period 2 as prior to this, it was not known that the student would retake the module.
