  2. HESA Finance data is collected from all publicly funded Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK, plus the University of Buckingham, which is a non-publicly-funded institution. The 2012/13 data covers 161 HEIs (129 in England, 10 in Wales, 18 in Scotland and 4 in Northern Ireland).
  3. Financial data relates to the HEIs' financial year, i.e. 1 August 2012 to 31 July 2013.
  4. Capital expenditure covers all expenditure which increases the value of an institution's fixed assets, including the purchase of land, buildings, and those items of equipment which are included in the institution's register of fixed assets and shown in the balance sheet. Full definitions for the publication can be found on-line here: www.hesa.ac.uk/intros/financesdefs1213
  5. In 2012/13 an English Institution misreported a number of items within Table 8 of their 2012/13 FSR return. As a result, their data has been removed from the Buildings and Internal funds columns of the tables in this press release. The totals shown for England and the UK therefore do not match the sums of each column.
