Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Longitudinal survey

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Longitudinal survey captures information about the activities and perspectives of graduates three and a half years after they completed their studies. The following report analyses the 107,340 responses we received to the winter 2016/17 survey which contacted 2012/13 leavers.

Views on HE

Around seventy five percent of respondents indicated that they would not choose a different provider were they to have such an option again. However, a higher proportion were likely to change the subject they studied (Table 19 and Chart 10). The percentage who indicated that they would alter their subject varied between just over twenty percent (Medicine & dentistry) to just under forty five percent (Mass communications & documentation).

Just under ninety percent of respondents said that they were very or fairly satisfied with their career to date (Table 20 and Chart 11). Despite this, there were large variations in satisfaction by the type of activity the leaver was involved in at the time of the survey, with those working part-time or voluntarily being less satisfied than those in full-time work. Those assumed to be unemployed were least satisfied with their career trajectory.

Around two-thirds of individuals agreed that the course they completed in 2012/13 was good value for money, with those studying Medicine and related subjects most strongly agreeing with this statement (Table 20).

HE experience...

With regards to helping people progress their career aspirations, just over three quarters of leavers thought that their HE experience had made a positive impact (Table 21 and Chart 11). A significant minority also believed that HE had prepared them for running their own business and being self-employed.
