The various indices of multiple deprivation use similar methodologies, but differ in the indicators used, the time periods included and the sizes of the areas they cover, which means that they are not fully comparable. SIMD unknown data are mapped using snapshot data.

There will be small fluctuations in the values for all IMD data between figures published in 2017/18 and 2018/19 due to the use of the latest ONSPD postcode file.

Socio-economic classification data should be used with caution, due to known quality issues. See Changes to the UK Performance Indicators for further information, including why these data are no longer used in our UK Performance Indicators.

POLAR low participation data has not been produced for HE providers and country of Domicile in Scotland, to align with the HESA Performance Indicators. As such, low participation figures for all countries in a given year, will not sum to totals represented at the bottom of the table.

POLAR4 data for Northern Ireland should be treated with caution. The Department for the Economy (Northern Ireland) recommend the use of the Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure Quintiles as a more representative measure of educational disadvantage among these students.

The English indices of deprivation (IMD) is maintained by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, and applies only to those domiciled from England. Data displayed in this table relate to IMD 2019. Participation of students domiciled from England shown within the IMD include those attending a provider anywhere in the UK.
