State school marker, parental education and socio-economic classification data exclude HE providers returning data the Student Alternative record and further education colleges. Socio-economic classification data should be used with caution, due to known quality issues. See Changes to the UK Performance Indicators for further information, including why these data are no longer used in our UK Performance Indicators.

This release contains data from the participation of local areas (POLAR) classification; a measure of relative HE participation across the UK. Some regions of the UK have traditionally high participation rates, including Scotland and Northern Ireland. Figures in these areas, when viewed in isolation could misrepresent the contribution being made to widening participation. For a number of years, HESA publications have for this reason excluded data for Scotland from POLAR figures (both where the country of HE provider or country of domicile is in Scotland). POLAR data is no longer produced for Northern Ireland (both where the country of HE provider or country of domicile is in Northern Ireland). As such, low participation figures for all countries in a given year, will not sum to totals represented at the bottom of the table.

There may be small fluctuations in the values for POLAR4 and IMD data between figures published by HESA in previous versions of this bulletin and this latest version due to the use of the latest ONSPD and CPD postcode files.

The various indices of multiple deprivation use similar methodologies, but differ in the indicators used, the time periods included and the sizes of the areas they cover, which means that they are not fully comparable.

The English indices of deprivation (IMD) is maintained by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, and applies only to those domiciled from England. Data displayed in this table relate to IMD 2019. The Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) is maintained by the Welsh Government, and applies only to those domiciled from Wales. Data displayed in this table relate to WIMD 2019. The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) is maintained by the Scottish Government and applies only to those domiciled from Scotland. SIMD data are mapped using snapshot data.

Data source

HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) is part of Jisc. We are the experts in UK higher education data and analysis. We have been collecting higher education information since the 1994/95 academic year.

We collect data on the activities of graduates from higher education via the Graduate Outcomes survey, an annual survey that asks about activities 15 months after graduation. Characteristics of graduates who achieved higher education qualifications from Higher Education providers in the UK and Further Education colleges in Wales are taken from the HESA Student record and alternative provider student record data collections.

Characteristics of graduates at Further Education colleges (FECs) in England are taken from data provided by the OfS from the Individualised Learner Record. Characteristics of graduates at FECs in Northern Ireland are taken from data provided by DfE(NI) from the Consolidated Data Return (CDR).

We provide data and analysis on graduates to a wide variety of customers, including:

  • Governments
  • Universities (via the Heidi Plus analytics tool)
  • Academic and commercial researchers
  • Students and potential students
  • Trade unions and employers' associations
  • Policy makers.

Our data is used to regulate the sector, inform policy making, advance understanding of social and economic trends, support decision making, and enhance public understanding of - and confidence in - the higher education sector.

Rounding and suppression strategy

We implement a rounding and suppression strategy in published and released tabulations designed to prevent the disclosure of personal information about any individual. This strategy involves rounding all numbers to the nearest multiple of 5 and suppressing percentages and averages based on small populations.
