Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education 2005/06

Notes to tables

  1. Students of unknown ages are included in total figures and percentage calculations but not in separate age breakdowns.

  2. Percentage of known destination excludes those who replied to the survey but explicitly refused to give information and is expressed as a percentage of all students from whom a destination of leavers record was expected.

  3. Students of unknown location of employment are included in total figures, but not in separate breakdowns. Unlike years prior to 2003/04, the UK domiciled students whose location of employment was given as unknown are not being assumed to have remained within the UK.

  4. Lower second class degree includes ‘undivided’ second class honours.

  5. Analyses of subject information show Full Person Equivalents (FPE). These are derived by splitting student records between the different subjects that make up their qualification aim. Totals of FPE may differ slightly to counts of students due to rounding.

  6. Employment overseas includes self-employed and all categories of employment.

  7. Students of unknown duration of employment are included in total figures.

  8. Total UK domiciled, postgraduate, first degree and other undergraduate include students who are known to be UK domiciled but whose exact region of domicile is unknown.

  9. Total UK includes UK domiciled students who are known to be employed in the UK but whose exact UK region of employment is unknown.

  10. Response rate includes those that replied to the survey but explicitly refused to give information and is expressed as a percentage of all students from whom a destination of leavers record was expected.

  11. European Union (EU) are those countries which were EU members as at 1 December 2004, this includes: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Irish Republic, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. EU Accession countries include those who joined the EU on 1 May 2004: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovak Republic, Slovenia. Other EEA (European Economic Area) countries includes: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein.

  12. The list of institutions in the HESA products for 2005/06 has changed.

    Merthyr Tydfil College of Further Education merged with the University of Glamorgan
    Homerton College merged with Anglia Ruskin University
    Leeds College of Music joined the higher education sector
    Kent Institute of Art and Design merged with The Surrey Institute of Art and Design University College to become The University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, Rochester.

  13. The following institutions have changed their names in the HESA products for 2005/06:

    Edge Hill College of Higher Education changed to Edge Hill University
    University of Luton changed to University of Bedfordshire
    York St John College changed to York St John University

  14. University of London is a confederal organisation. The colleges of the university, shown separately in the HESA reference volumes, are:

  15. The University of Cambridge has taken the opportunity of a new student record system to review the recording of student data. The Head of Planning and Resource Allocation at the University of Cambridge should be consulted about significant variances when comparing data for 2004/05 and 2005/06 or using 2005/06 data where there are particular sensitivities. These sensitivities include postgraduate research and postgraduate taught totals and 'other postgraduate' and 'other undergraduate' totals.
