Student Alternative 2020/21 (C20054): Supplementary Notification of Changes

Update to QualificationsAwarded.CLASS valid entries

New valid entries will be added to the QualificationsAwarded.CLASS field to allow providers that do not classify student attainment using existing valid entries in that field, to return Grade Point Average (GPA). The following GPA brackets will be added:

• 3.60-4.00 GPA
• 3.00-3.59 GPA
• 2.20-2.99 GPA
• 2.00-2.19 GPA
• 0.00-1.99 GPA

This change allows affected providers to more accurately return the qualification classifications obtained by students.

HESA are aware of previous developmental work within the sector, regarding the use of Grade Point Average (GPA) and we are also aware that the draft standard outlined (see the AdvanceHE website) does not align with these additional GPA bands in CLASS. While providers involved in that work have explored the award of GPA alongside existing classification systems, we are also aware that some providers are awarding GPA only. This change will therefore allow them to record student attainment in their HESA submission more accurately. We appreciate that this is a late change which doesn’t give us the opportunity for a consultation. Therefore we look to consider a wider review of the inclusion of GPA within the CLASS framework, likely for implementation in Data Futures, and will communicate this with providers when there is further information to share.
