Appendix 1: Creation of marker containing seven categories

Here, we illustrate through the use of numbers and letters how the initial variable consisting of fifteen categories was aggregated to create the marker we use in our analysis above comprising of seven groups.

1. Resided and works in same LAUA and attended a provider in the same UK region A. Stays in same region for study and finds work in same LAUA as original location of residence
2. Resided and works in same LAUA, but attended a provider in a different UK region within the same country

3. Resided and works in same LAUA, but attended a provider in a different UK country 

B. Returns to the same LAUA for work as original location of residence, having left region/country for study
4. Resided in different LAUA to the LAUA of work, but both are within the same UK region. Attended a provider in same region C. Stays in same region for study, but finds work in different LAUA (in the same region) to original location of residence
5. Resided in a different LAUA to the LAUA of work, but both are within the same UK region. Attended a provider in different region of the same UK country

6. Resided in a different LAUA to the LAUA of work, but both are within the same UK region. Attended a provider in a different UK country 

D. Returns to a different LAUA (of the same region) for work when compared with original location of residence, having moved region/country for study
7. Resided in a different region (of the same UK country) to the region of work. Attended a provider in same region as resided

11. Resided in a different UK country to the UK country of work. Attended a provider in the same region as resided 

E. Moved region/country for work, but did not move region for study
8. Resided in a different region (of the same UK country) to the region of work. Attended a provider in same region as work

12. Resided in a different UK country to the UK country of work. Attended a provider in the same region as work 

F. Moved region/country for study, but did not then move region/country again for work
9. Resided in a different region (of the same UK country) to the region of work. Attended a provider in a different region (of the same UK country) to the region of residency and work

10. Resided in a different region (of the same UK country) to the region of work. Attended a provider in a different UK country to the UK country of residency and work

13. Resided in a different UK country to the UK country of work. Attended a provider in a different region (of the same UK country) as resided

14. Resided in a different UK country to the UK country of work. Attended a provider in a different region (of the same UK country) as work

15. Resided in a different UK country to the UK country of work. Attended a provider in a different UK country to the UK country of residency and work 

G. Moved region/country for study and then moved region/country again for work (with the region/country being different to their original region/country of residence)
